After a marathon match against Bianca Andreescu in the first round that lasted almost three hours, Jasmine Paolini lands virtually without playing in the third round of the US Open women’s singles.
Opposing the Czech Karolina Pliskova, who è was world No. 1 for seven weeks in 2017 and is now è No. 44, the Italian hardly played a single game as her rival after only three points threw in the towel due to a sprained left ankle.
Paolini, declared the winner with a score of 0-0, consoled the Czech: "I hope she recovers soon becauseé è sad to see her leave the court like this. We didn’t play a real match. It is not good for tennis. I just hope she gets better and we will see her back on the court soon".
The 28-year-old from Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany, world No. 5, will now face Russian defending Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva for a place in the round of 16.
