Carlos Alcaraz flops, what changes for Jannik Sinner: ranking and scoreboard
Flop Carlos Alcaraz, what changes for Jannik Sinner: ranking and scoreboard
Carlos Alcaraz's unexpected meltdown has created inevitable repercussions in the US Open 2024 scoreboard: the Spaniard, Jannik Sinner's expected opponent in the semifinals, instead leaves a void that will surely be filled by an outsider, with perhaps Alex De Minaur and our own Matteo Arnaldi among the most accredited in that part of the scoreboard.
The road to the last four of the tournament è still a long one, and for Sinner a major obstacle in the quarterfinals lies ahead: the Russian Daniil Medvedev, who eliminated him at Wimbledon. But should he qualify in the semifinals, the Blue would become the clear favorite to reach the final act of the New York Slam.
Alcaraz's heavy defeat will also have major consequences for his ranking, with the Iberian in danger of plummeting in the rankings after the end of the American tournament. After this knockout, the possibility of regaining Jannik Sinner's throne by the end of the year now seems remote.
Alcaraz is also in danger of slipping to fifth in the ATP rankings: Alexander Zverev has already overtaken him and soon Daniil Medvedev might too if he gets far enough ahead in the tournament. Sinner’s number one spot looks more and more secure.
