ATP Finals without Novak Djokovic: Serbian champion explains backward step
ATP Finals, Novak Djokovic announces forfeit
Novak Djokovic will not defend the ATP Finals title he won 12 months ago by defeating Jannik Sinner in the final. The news, which was in the air for several days, è was confirmed by the Serbian champion himself, who explained on Instagram the reason for the step back. Djokovic è stopped since the consolation final of the Six Kings Slam, won against Rafa Nadal last October 19.
"It's really an honor to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin,‖ said Nole, who occupies sixth place in the Race.
I was looking forward to the chance to be there, but I am still struggling with an injury and will not be able to play next week. I apologize to all those who had planned to come to see me".
"I wish all the players to experience a garnde tournament. See you soon" he then concluded Djokovic, who therefore will not be able to aim for his eighth Finals title after those won in the 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2022 and 2023 editions. Djokovic's 2024 will therefore be remembered mainly for the Olympic gold he won in Paris, as the Serb has not been able to impose himself in Slam tournaments and will not play the Finals.
Last year Djokovic defeated the current world No. 1, Jannik Sinner, 6-3, 6-3, in the final in Turin, redeeming a three-set loss (7-5, 6-7, 7-6) in the round. The Serb’s high-level season, given his national team’s absence from the Davis Cup finals, thus ends here with only one (albeité very important) success, the one in Five Circles last August.
