ATP Finals: Fritz surprises Medvedev and flies into the lead of Jannik Sinner’s group
Taylor Fritz-Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-3
From the’beginning of the match è Taylor Fritz to give the’impression of having a little something more. The American struggles less overall on his own serves and è always pushing, while in Daniil Medvedev the
ball 'walks' less than usual.
That something is wrong for the Russian will become clear an hour or so later, but first the world No. 4 is in time to lose the first set by committing three consecutive double faults, which give Fritz the first partial on the first break ball of the entire match: 6-4.
Medvedev disintegrates a racket at the changeover but immediately has three break chances in the first two games of the second set, but fails to take advantage of them. In the third, however, Fritz stretches: a poorly hit lob sends Taylor flying to 4-2 and unleashes the Russian’s anger. Medvedev began sending his racket flying through the air after each point lost, threatening at one point to answer with the handle.
It lasts one’hour and twenty the first match of the Nitto ATP Finals 2024: Taylor Fritz wins it, 6-4 6-3, clinching the Nastase group lead, pending Sinner-De Minaur tonight at 8:30 p.m.
