Weronika Falkowska catcher in Runggaditsch
Weronika Falkowska pigliatutto in Runggaditsch
At the beautiful tennis facility in Runggaditsch, Weronika Falkowska turned the "Raiffeisen ITF Women’s $25,000 Val Gardena Südtirol" into a true personal temple of success. The 24-year-old Pole won both the singles and doubles titles over the weekend.
In the singles final, played Saturday, Falkowska faced Silvia Ambrosio, an athlete from TC Rungg. Despite hard-fought sets, Falkowska è won by a score of 6-4, 7-5. In the decisive moments, the Polish player showed steady nerves and great intuition. "Today I was more determined, I did not want to concede easy points and I strictly followed my match plan. This è was the key to success", explained the visibly satisfied winner after the match.
Ambrosio, on the other hand, struggled with her own fitness: "From the beginning my shots were not at their best. She served very well and it was difficult to get a break. I simply was not at the level of the past few days." The German-born 27-year-old, who has been representing her parents’ homeland for a year and a half, admitted that tournament fatigue was being felt, especially after a season with few matches: "I have never played more than three matches in a tournament. Today I felt it."
Already on Friday, Falkowska had given a strong signal. Paired with Sweden’s Lisa Zaar, she captured the doubles title in a hard-fought final, saving two match points against Ekaterina Ovcharenko and Emily Webley-Smith. This triumph enabled her to reach her remarkable 23° ITF doubles title. She currently ranks 187° in the world doubles rankings, but the tournament in South Tyrol proved that there's room to grow further.
With her victory in the singles tournament, Falkowska celebrated her eighth career ITF title and took home a prize of 3,542 euros. She will also improve her position in the WTA singles ranking, marking another important milestone for the ambitious Polish player. The success in Ortisei highlights not only her versatility, but also her ability to give her all in the decisive moments.
For next year, TC Ortisei is aiming even higher. Work is underway to organize a $125,000 WTA tournament. The organizing team led by Martina Moser è already working on this mega event for South Tyrol and beyond. "We are already placed on the WTA calendar for the second week of October. However, there are still some question marks. We need strong sponsors to help us realize this project. We will meet in late January or early February to finalize everything with the organizing committee", explained the manager.
