Italian soccer mourns the passing of Marco Cacciatori, who died at age 68 at the Apuane Hospital in Massa (Massa-Carrara) after a long illness. A striker known for his powerful left foot and extraordinary skills in the aerial game, he è was a symbolic figure of Carrarese, a team with which he left an indelible mark in football history, scoring 60 league goals in the gialloazzurra jersey.

Born in Carrara on Feb. 3, 1956, Marco, affectionately nicknamed "Cacetta", made his very young debut in Serie D with Carrarese. His career took off for good in the 1977-78 season, when with 25 goals in 34 games he dragged the Tuscan team to Serie C2 and then became market man. In 1978 he moved to Perugia, led by Castagner, to play in Serie A. His debut came against Inter, where he scored a goal in the final minutes.

However, his career underwent’an abrupt interruption due to a cancer diagnosis, which forced him to stop for three years.

This story had a wide media echo and moved everyone. Despite the tremendous setback, Marco did not give up and returned to the field, wearing again the Carrarese jersey, followed by experiences with Reggiana, Montevarchi, Pistoiese, Sarzanese and Pietrasanta.

After retiring, Cacciatori also faced bureaucratic hurdles in obtaining a player pension, a problem solved thanks to the support of the players’association. Marco leaves behind his wife Daniela and son Emanuele.
