Fencing starts again from the sword
It will beà Doha that will open the 2025 International Epee Absolute. From January 24 to 26, in fact, in the Qatari capital will be staged the first Grand Prix of the season for the specialty, in which 24 Italians of CT Dario Chiadò will take part, equally divided between men and women, marking the return to the platform, after the splendid team triumph in Paris 2024, of Olympians Rossella Fiamingo and Alberta Santuccio.
In Doha, as in all the trials of the d’élite GP FIE circuit, only the individual high-score competitions will be staged, and the calendar will unravel in two initial days of preliminary rounds, on the 24th for the women’s event and on the 25th for the men’s, while on Sunday, January 26, the main draw boards of the two competitions will be played until the podium verdict.
Big comeback for the champions from Paris. Three-time Olympic medalist Rossella Fiamingo and the “woman of the ’last hit” as well as fresh bride Alberta Santuccio will re-enter the competition alongside fellow gold medalist Giulia Rizzi, along with Alessandra Bozza, Gaia Caforio, Alice Clerici, Federica Isola, Sara Maria Kowalczyk, Carola Maccagno, Roberta Marzani, Lucrezia Paulis and Gaia Traditi.
In the men’s competition, on the other hand, the Azzurri on the platform will be Filippo Armaleo, Gianpaolo Buzzacchino, Gabriele Cimini, Valerio Cuomo, Fabrizio Cuomo, Nicolò Del Contrasto, Davide Di Veroli, Giulio Gaetani, Simone Mencarelli, Marco Paganelli, Giacomo Paolini and Enrico Piatti.
The Italian expedition, which will prepare for the first Grand Prix of the year in collegiate training at the CONI Center in Tirrenia (Jan. 13-17), will be led in Doha by the Italian epee technical commissioner Dario Chiadò, flanked by staff masters Roberto Cirillo, Enrico Di Ciolo, Daniele Pantoni and Alfredo Rota, with the support of physiotherapists Veronica Balzano and Maurizio Iaschi.
