Alexander Zverev cuts off Jannik Sinner

During an interview published on the Australian Open's X profile, Alexander Zverev, world number two and second seed in Melbourne, indulged in a bold prediction ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season.

Asked about the favorite’s role in the Australian major, in fact, the German tennis player did not hesitate: "I think there will be; a new champion in men’s singles".

With this answer Sascha effectively shut out Jannik Sinner, last year’s Australian Open winner, as well as Novak Djokovic, a 10-time champion in Melbourne. The German, still chasing a Grand Slam title, might have bet on himself or on Carlos Alcaraz, still in the hunt for his first Slam in Australia, or for example on Daniil Medvedev, already a finalist in three editions in Melbourne (2021, 2022, 2024).

The Australian Open will kick off on Sunday, January 12. The men’s singles draw è scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 9 at 4:30 a.m. Italian time. Sinner leads the seeding with Zverev’s own right behind him, meaning the two could only cross paths in the final.
