On the Italian night Sara Errani, the last Italian player in the running in the Australian Open qualifiers, è exited the stage in the second round. The 37-year-old from Romagna é was defeated by 17-year-old Czech Brenda Fruhvirtova (world number 197) with a score of 6-0 6-2, in exactly one hour of play.
Among the men, on the other hand, Matteo Gigante (world No. 146) and Francesco Passaro (No. 105) qualified for the round that can open for them access to the main draw at the Australian Open, the first Slam of the season, which kicks off on Sunday. The former by beating Austria's Lukas Neumayer (No. 216, 6-3 6-4), the latter at the expense of Spain's Javier Barranco Cosano (No. 227, 4-6 6-3 7-6), in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
In the decisive round Gigante will face Portugal’s Henrique Rocha (No. 174), while Passaro will face Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (No. 210). For both there is no previous record. In the second round, however, Mattia Bellucci’s (No. 101) run came to a halt, defeated by Frenchman Terence Atmane (No. 156), with a score of 7-6 6-4.
