Myriam Sylla puts a stop to an old controversy

Olympic champion and among the strongest Italian players of her generation (è hers was the final point that guaranteed Italy the Olympic gold medal in women’s volleyball), Myriam Sylla entrusted her thoughts to 'Vogue Italia', which granted her space on her 30th birthday. In the course of the interview, Sylla è returned to a rather painful chapter that featured her national teammate (and for a couple of seasons also club teammate), Paola Egonu.

In'October 2022, Egonu in fact announced her retirement with immediate effect from the national team after some unfortunate phrases against her, returning only after several weeks on her own steps. "We have all suffered with her,” Sylla recounted, “but the best response to ’ignorance è not retreating, not abandoning the court".

That chapter è therefore definitely closed, although Myriam Sylla was keen to add, on the topic related to second-generation Italians: "I follow on TikTok people of my generation who still do not have Italian passports, and that drives me out of my mind,” she said. “There is no way that, in 2024, there are little boys and girls who cannot complete their identity. They were born here, raised here, eat and speak Italian".

Stronger than the controversy, Egonu and Sylla contributed, as did all the other Azzurre, to the great success in Paris: "Not just any medal, but the most precious one – said Sylla. Before leaving for Paris I had talked about it with my teammates, omitting to specify the metal so as not to put too much pressure on them. But of the’silver I would not have been satisfied".
