Australian Open 2025, sensational Daniil Medvedev: eliminated after five hours

An historic defeat after nearly five incredible hours.
After only two rounds and nearly five hours of play, the adventure at the Australian Open 2025 ends for Daniil Medvedev. The Russian, No. 5 on the ATP circuit, is resoundingly bowed out in five sets by Learner Tien, a 2005-born American who instead è the No. 121 in world tennis. Historic the scorecard of his victory, which coincided with an unbelievable beating of his opponent: 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 1-6, 7-6(7).
That the passage to the round may turn out to be a real nightmare for Medvedev can be understood immediately, already from the first set: to win it è in fact Tien, who concedes the break to the much moreù emblazoned rival on 2-1 but then recovers two of them in the sixth and eighth games completing an incredible overtaking. The nightmare for the Russian continued in the second set, in which four breaks in a row came between the second and fourth games. Incredibly, the scenario is repeated twice more, with the world No. 5 having to recover at 4-4 and 6-6 before surrendering at the tie-break.
The third set finally seemed to see Medvedev recover, albeit amidst a thousand struggles. This time è Tien clawed back a break, immediately leading from 3-4 to 4-4. There are no more jolts and it goes again to the tie-break, where the Russian manages to nullify his opponent’s first match point at 6-7 and gets back into the game by nailing him at 10-8. And the day seemed to turn around in the fourth set, this time one-sided: 6-1.
Medvedev’s day è però far from being able to be saved. This was made clear in the first game of the last set, in which Tien nullified three break points for him and took the point. Once again the two exchanged serve from 3-1 to 3-2 for the American and 6-5 to 6-6 in the last illusory lead for the Russian. Yet another tie-break this time rewards his rival, who gives himself an unthinkable passage to the round.
