European short track: splendid gold for Arianna Fontana, on the podium is also Elisa Confortola

European short track, women’s 1,000 meters: Arianna Fontana first, Elisa Confortola third
From Dresden, Germany, where the European Short Track Championships are being held, comes splendid news for the Tricolor: Arianna Fontana has in fact enriched her extraordinary trophy case with another gold medal, winning the final of the women’s 1,000 meters, and celebrating together with another Azzurra, Elisa Confortola, bronze medalist.
The final, which saw Hungary's Petra Jaszapati finish in second place and, therefore, take the silver medal, was tense and hard-fought, with the Dutch Zoe Deltrap and Poland's Kamila Stormowska disqualified, the former in particular due to a push against Confortola during the last lap.
Out of the medals was the other Azzurra in the finals, Gloria Ioratti, who was ranked fourth after the race jury’s decisions. For Arianna Fontana è yet another European laurel, as well as the first gold medal seven years after her previous ones, won in the 1,000 meters and in the overall also in Dresden, in 2018.
The European Short Track Championships have been held annually since 1997, with the first edition held in Malmo, Sweden. Italy hosted them in Bormio in 2000 and twice in Turin, in 2009 and 2017. Only in 2022 was the event (which was still supposed to be held in Dresden) not held, due to the evolving situation related to the Covid in Germany at the end of 2021.
