Luis de la Fuente renews with Spain
After triumphing at the 2024 European Championships in Germany, Luis de la Fuente has officially renewed with Spain. It was announced by the Spanish soccer federation itself, which announced the extension of its coach until June 30, 2028.
"The Royal Spanish Football Federation has agreed to renew the confidence of the governing body in the figure of Luis de la Fuente , who will continue to lead the national team as coach until the end of the European Championships to be held in 2028, as informed by the RFEF Board of Directors during its meeting held Monday, Jan. 27, in Las Rozas. The coach thus prolongs his successful and unanimously celebrated relationship with the RFEF, which dates back to early 2013 with his arrival in the lower categories of the national team and which, as of Dec. 12, 2022, places De la Fuente at the helm of the senior men’s team.
Born in the city of Haro, Rioja, Luis de la Fuente Castillo è was a professional footballer in major clubs such as Sevilla, Deportivo Alavés and Athletic Club, with whom he won League, Cup and Super Cup titles, as well as defending the shirt of the National Team in the sub-18, sub-21 and Olympic categories. After retiring from playing soccer, he directed from the bench many of the young talents of Spanish soccer, achieving for Spain the European under-19 ( 2015), under-21 (2019) championships, as well as the gold medal at the Mediterranean Games (2018) and silver at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
