Jasmine Paolini, an hour to forget in Doha

Tough defeat for Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16 of the “Qatar TotalEnergies Open” (WTA 1000 – prize money $3,664,963) being played on the concrete courts of the Khalifa International Tennis Complex in Doha.

The 29-year-old from Bagni di Lucca, number 4 in the rankings and fourth favorite in the seedings, who entered the competition directly in the second round by beating Frenchwoman Garcia, number 76 WTA, in two sets, succumbed 6-2 6-2, in just one hour and five minutes of play, to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko, number 37 WTA, who boasts one final (2016, beaten in three sets by Spain’s Suarez Navarro) and one semifinal (2022, overcome in two sets by Estonia’s Kontaveit) in this tournament.

For the 27-year-old from Riga è it was the second success in three challenges with the 29-year-old from Bagni di Lucca, already beaten in the first round of the Us Open (cement) in 2023.
