Mats Wilander analyzed Carlos Alcaraz’s complicated moment at the microphones of Eurosport: “I think Alcaraz is experiencing today what he will experience throughout his career: fickleness. He will know how to do wonders and these will help him win matches, then he will do others but eventually he will lose”.

“Andre Agassi in this is very much like him – explained the’former world number one -: he would win major tournaments and Slams, then fall on an easy first round. This happened to him especially during the European seasons, no matter if indoor or outdoor. He would suffer major stoppages, then return to America and resume winning and returning to the spotlight as number one”.

“For an elite player, you can’t lose a first set so easily – he added on the loss to Jack Draper in Indian Wells. “It can happen to lose the third set, but in general I think the problem Carlos is experiencing today is difficult to solve. Of course, we’re not really used to a former number one, and maybe future number one ranking, so erratic in performance. I do not think we will ever see that in Jannik Sinner”.

“Every time Alcaraz loses a match, a green light goes on in the locker room. Everyone thinks they have no chance to beat him, then someone beats him and there are at least five players who start thinking, ‘next time I’ll beat him. That’s the problem with Carlos, the fear of playing him goes away” Wilander concluded.
