Federica Brignone&#8217s adventure at the Italian championships in Val di Fassa ended in the worst way. During the second run of the giant slalom, in fact, the skier from Valle d’Aosta had a very bad fall, suffering a multi-fragmentary compound fracture of the tibial plateau and the head of the fibula.

The reigning world champion, after the’accident, was flown by helicopter to ’La Madonnina” hospital in Milan to undergo surgery. On the condition of the 34-year-old from La Salle and the’extent of the injury, the president of the FISI Medical Commission Andrea Panzeri expressed himself in no uncertain terms.

“He had a very bad fall, so he got this fairly major bill of the lateral tibial plateau. After the examinations, seeing also how much the knee had swollen, we decided to go immediately to the operating room” began the FISI doctor.

“The fracture is challenging and the’bone has broken significantly, but she is strong, fortunately she is healthy and has never been hurt in a major way as happened on this occasion. It&#8217s difficult to make a prediction about recovery time. We will have a more accurate picture in the coming days” continued the chairman of the medical committee.

“I must say that I found her serene, like all great athletes, when they get hurt they accept what happens, definitely not happy. She had an exceptional season and this thing was not wanted, but like all great champions she will also be able to react” added the FISI doctor.

“The postoperative phase will be depending on how the surgery will go, how we manage to reduce the fracture, how many screws, so she will tend to have a period of unloading where the important thing will be to make sure that the knee does not swell too much. After that he will be able to gradually start regaining motion. I can guarantee that the recovery will not be very fast, we are talking about many months” Andrea Panzeri concluded.
