"The Only Ones In History": 40 years since Verona’s Scudetto

“The Only Ones In History.” That’s how Hellas Verona titled its celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the historic Scudetto, won by the Gialloblù on May 12, 1985 after a 1-on-1 win against Atalanta in Bergamo. The presentation took place in the heart of Verona’s historic center, at Hotel Due Torri in Piazza S. Anastasia. In attendance were 1984-85 tricolor champions Pierino Fanna, Hans Peter Briegel, Domenico Volpati, Gigi Sacchetti, the mayor of Verona former Hellas Roma and national team player Damiano Tommasi, and Province President Flavio Pasini. Briegel recalled when on the eve of Verona-Napoli coach Bagnoli knocked on his room door. At that time the German did not speak Italian. Osvaldo entered and said to him, “You, tomorrow, Maradona.” Answer: “Yes.” Translated: you tomorrow mark the Argentine champion. “I knew my teammates were ready.” The next day Maradona, making his debut in the Italian league, did not touch the ball. Domenico Volpati, the Scudetto halfback, recalled the phrase-mantra he said in the locker room as soon as he won the Scudetto: “Time will tell what we have done.” Even today, 40 years later, that Scudetto is historic, loved by the people of Verona, admired and envied by so many teams in Italy. “The Scudetto? An eternal joy. The present? Fighting for the jersey always,” summed up Hellas Verona executive president Italo Zanzi.
