He could have been one of the biggest names in upcoming summer soccer, but he preferred to tie himself to Liverpool until he turns 36: Virgil van Dijk has in fact renewed his contract with the Reds, extending the deal that began in January 2018 until 2027. The Dutch defender has thus decided not to leave the club with which he has won almost everything in England and in international competitions.

“I am delighted and proud – explained said Van Dijk to the official channels of the Merseyside club -While I am talking about it I am really so excited, it is simply unbelievable. To be able to extend the path with such an amazing club for another two years makes me The path I have had so far in my career, to be able to extend it for another two years at this club is amazing makes me so happy”.

The Dutch defender explained why he decided to take himself off the market: “My plan has always been to stay at Liverpool. I have no doubts, this is the right place for me and my family. There are those who call me a ‘Scouser’ (as Liverpool natives are informally called, ed.), it is a great feeling”.

Virgil van Dijk arrived at Liverpool in January 2018, coming from Southampton, for the fee of 84 million euros, the highest amount ever paid by the Reds for a footballer.

On the Mersey shores, he won the 2019-2020 Premier League (and is on course to win the second), as well as two League Cups, an FA Cup and a Community Shield. Internationally, he won the 2018-2019 Champions League and, a few months later, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
