Bitter repechage for Elisabetta Cocciaretto in Madrid

Elisabetta Cocciaretto says goodbye to the Madrid Masters 1000 in the second round. After being repechaged in the draw due to the withdrawal of Karolina Muchova, the Italian tennis player was eliminated by Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva, who won the match with a score of 7-6 6-4, after almost two hours of play.
In the first set, the Italian immediately got off to a rocket start, winning three of the first four games. The rival’s counter-par, however, was not long in coming, as she immediately put the match back on an even keel by winning four of the next five games. The match, then, slipped to the tie-break, which was won by Starodubtseva with a score of 7-5.
In the second set, the momentum is all on the side of the Ukrainian player, who finds the break in the fifth game. After confirming the lead, it is just a formality for the world number 99 to administer her own serve turns, closing the score on 6-4.
The Ukrainian player is the only one who is able to win.
Awaiting Yuliia Starodubtseva in the next round will be Russia’s Ljudmila Samsonova, who folded American Caroline Dolehide’s debut with a double 6-4.
