In the second round of the Madrid Masters 1000, Matteo Berrettini, world number 31, beat the U.S. Marcos Giron, number 45, in over two and a half hours of play with a score of 6-7 7-6 6-1.

The only one to have beak balls in the first set was Berrettini, but he did not take advantage of two consecutive ones on 2-1 and especially three consecutive ones, which were also three set points, on 5-4. The tie-break is the prerogative of Giron, who goes 3-1, 5-2 and finally wins it 7-3 on the first set point.

The two players do not even have a single eak ball in the entire second set and there is only one game that goes to the advantage, the twelfth, when Matteo serves, who then in the tie-break has two set points and misses them but fortunately the third, the one of the decisive 8-6, is the good one.

The third set has no history and it is Berrettini who dominates it flying to 5-0 and then closing 6-1 despite asking for a medical timeout at the beginning of the decisive partial due to an abdominal problem. Now the Roman will meet Britain’s Jack Draper, the number 5 seed.
