After securing a pass to the round of 16 in the singles draw, Lorenzo Musetti failed to repeat in the doubles tournament at the Madrid Masters 1000. He and Flavio Cobolli, in fact, were defeated in two sets by Croatian Nikola Mektic and New Zealander Michael Venus with a score of 6-3 7-6, after one’hour and twenty minutes of play.

In the first set, after an initial balance, it was Mektic and Venus who placed the first breakthrough thanks to a partial break of three consecutive games between the fifth and seventh games. On the strength of the break advantage, it is just a formality for the number six seeded pair to close the file with a score of 6-3.

In the second half it is Cobolli and Musetti who get off to a better start, finding the break in the second game. The joy, however, was short-lived, as the rival pair immediately placed the counter-break. From that moment, all four players easily manage to hold their serve and the match thus slips to the tie-break, which is won by the Croatian and the New Zealander with a score of 7-4.

At the quarterfinals, Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus will face the winners of the match between the pair consisting of Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic and the duo consisting of Jamie Murray and Rajeev Ram.
