WTA 1000 Montreal, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini out in the round of 16

Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini’s run in the women’s doubles draw at the WTA 1000 in Montreal ends in the round of 16.

The two blues, early favorites in the seeding and second in the Race to Riyadh, succumbed 7-6(3) 6-2, in an hour and 27 minutes of play, to Czech Barbora Krejcikova (former No. 1 specialty and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.

Her own Krejcikova had beaten Paolini in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon last year, and both the Czech and the Latvian won singles at Roland Garros in 2021 and 2017, respectively.

In the first set Krejcikova and Ostapenko were almost always ahead in the score, first at 2-0 and then at 5-3. Both times the women’s blues came back but then succumbed at the tie-break 7-3 and then in the second set, from 2-1 with break, they lost the last five games.
