Farewell to Marco Bonamico, condolences from Gianni Petrucci

The news of the disappearance, at age 68, of Marco Bonamico has struck the entire basketball world, which mourns one of the basketball players who made the history of basketball in Italy. The Italian Basketball Federation, through an official note, expressed the sorrow of the highest basketball institution and its president, Gianni Petrucci.

“There has left us in the night the “Marine”, Marco Bonamico, one of the most talented Italian players of all time – reads the statement released on Monday morning -. He was 68 years old and had been hospitalized for several days at Bellaria Hospital. He left a positive memory as an athlete and as a man in every reality that saw him as a protagonist”.

“FIP President Gianni Petrucci, moved and affected by the news, on a personal basis and on behalf of Italian basketball, is close to the family, Mrs. Clara and daughter Elena, and shares their condolences” the note reads further. Bonamico, a two-time champion of Italy with Virtus Bologna (1976 and 1984), was also vice-Olympic champion in Moscow 1980 and champion of Europe with the national team in 1983.

In addition to the Vu nere, for whom he had played in four different periods (1975-1976, 1977-1978, 1980-1986 and 1988-1989), Marco Bonamico had also played for Fortitudo Bologna (1976-1977), Mens Sana Siena (1978-1979), Olimpia Milano (1979-1980), Napoli Basket (1986-1988), Libertas Forlì (1989-1993) and Udine (1993-1995). He was also president of GIBA and Legadue, as well as a basketball commentator on TV after retiring from competition.
