Tuesday to forget for Elisabetta Cocciaretto

El Elisabetta Cocciaretto’s experience in Cincinnati, where the Marchewoman had been included in the qualifying draw: she is Priscilla Hon, Australian world number 129, to oust the’current WTA number 77, beating her 6-4, 6-4 at the ‘first’ for Cocciaretto, in North America as far as this season is concerned.

The’Azzurra got off to a bad start, going down 0-2 right away, but managed to recover until 3-3, before, however, letting slip an opportunity to take the lead on her own serve, eventually going on to lose the first set after 47 minutes. The second fraction is similarly balanced until 3-3: Hon shows more lucidity in the decisive moment and wins a victory that will allow her to play in the final round for access to the main draw.

So the North American trip starts badly for Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who came to Cincinnati after the elimination in the second round in Prague, which, however, had followed the splendid affirmation in Sweden, in the Bastaad Challenger. From a purely statistical point of view, this is the second defeat in a row for the 2001-born athlete, who had previously won six consecutive matches.

A Tuesday to forget, in short, for Cocciaretto, who this season is trying to climb back up a ranking that sees her outside the Top 50, a far cry from that 29th place she reached about two years ago, on Aug. 21, 2023. The ambition is to continue training and find the right form to surpass her best result at the US Open, the second round reached in 2024.
