It will be the Germany of Italian coach, Giulio Bregoli, Italy’s opponent in the round of 16 of the World Championships being held in Thailand. The Germans, beaten in the last round of Pool G by Poland in the play-off match for the top of the group, will therefore face the Azzurri on Saturday, August 30 at 12:00 p.m. Italian time at PalaHuamark in Bangkok in the first knockout challenge of the World Championships. Captain Danesi and her teammates, who today enjoyed a day of absolute rest to recharge their batteries ahead of the final phase, will leave Phuket tomorrow, Thursday, August 28, to fly to the Thai capital. It is therefore time to turn the page to go on the onslaught of in-or-out matches.

Commenting on the intersection with Germany in the round of 16 is Italy’s director, Carlotta Cambi, who is now close to full recovery from the minor muscle discomfort in her leg that kept her, as a precaution, off the court in the matches with Cuba and Belgium: “My recovery is progressing well, the medical staff has worked very well with me, the timing has been respected and therefore I can say that I am now ready for a full recovery. Now in Bangkok the in-or-out matches start, it will be a struggle starting with the challenge with Germany. They play a particular volleyball and above all done well. I expect a complex match in light also of the difficulties faced in the VNL match played at the beginning of June in Rio. For these reasons I think Italy-Germany will be a really close match.”

The first phase of the World Championships has been completed. In Pool E, Turkey beat Canada to take the top spot in the group with 3 wins in as many matches played while Spain ended its stay in Thailand by overcoming Bulgaria. In Group F, China overcame the Dominican Republic by pulling off the pass as first against the very Caribbean women (second) while Mexico got the better of Colombia on tiebreak. In Pool G, that of Poland and Germany, Kenya greeted Thailand with the smile of success over Vietnam. Finally in Group H, Japan won the challenge with Serbia getting the top seed in their pool while Ukraine got the better of Cameroon.
