Directly from the pages of d”El Pais’, Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal’s uncle and longtime coach, analyzed the Us Open final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. “During the two weeks of the tournament Alcaraz has shown that he is the fittest player of the moment – he began -. This victory represents, without a doubt, an important stage in his career. A different outcome would have given Sinner a huge morale boost and outlined a different landscape for the Spanish player”.

“Perhaps on Sunday we did not see the best version of Jannik– added the Majorcan&#8217s former coach -, but I venture to say that even if he had played at his best, I doubt he would have been able to counter Carlos. The Murcian’s first set was one of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen him play. He came close to perfection, played at a very high tempo, made very few errors, and, moreover, was able to vary the pace of his shots when the situation called for it”.

“In the second set Jannik was able to change the inertia but this new script was short-lived, very short-lived – explained the Spaniard -. Showing off his extraordinary tennis level, his incredible grit, his great creativity, power and intelligence, Carlos came back to dominate the match and no longer allowed his opponent any chances. On this occasion it was the Spaniard who imposed the pace of the match. Jannik found himself completely overwhelmed by the intensity, variety and quality of his rival”’s strikes.

In the press conference, Sinner admitted that he will have to be a bit’more unpredictable: “I couldn&#8217t agree more: while it is true that the Italian player possesses an uncommon solidity and power, it is also true that he will have to make an effort to be able to surprise Carlos, the only player who, at this moment, is complete and knows how to do everything. And he does it very well”.
