Death Matteo Franzoso, Matilde Lorenzi’s father to shudder: "Not a fatality"

Matteo Franzoso has died, from the aftermath of a tragic accident in Chile. An episode that sends shivers, increased further by the knowledge that the young Ligurian skier is not alone. Less than a year ago it was in fact Matilde Lorenzi who lost her life on a training slope in Val Senales. And Adolfo, father of the then 19-year-old athlete, admitted that he again experienced the deep pain of his daughter’s passing. Adding, however, that from his point of view we can no longer speak of fatality.

Three lives cut short in not even a year
Kristian Ghedina: “Skiing too fast”

“The news of Matteo’s accident is terrible. My wife and I have fallen back into the abyss of that October 28, 2024, when our daughter left us. There could not have been a worse blow”, were the words of Adolfo Lorenzi, gathered by ‘Repubblica’.

Matilde Lorenzi’s father added that he has not yet wanted to contact Matteo Franzoso’s parents: “Now it is too early, we did not want to disturb them. But when they return to Italy, we will make ourselves available. Over the years we have shared everything: the races, the trips, the lunches and dinners. Matteo grew up on the same snow as Lucrezia, our eldest daughter, since the baby” category.

“More than words – added Lorenzi – it matters to be there. No one teaches you, but if you have been there you know how it works. Only those who have gone through the same experience as you can really understand you. We held together because of the closeness of parents of kids who died in the mountains, in so many ways, not just skiing. Now we have to pass the baton”.

Matilde Lorenzi&#8217s father also addressed a sensitive issue such as the attention of the institutions of sports and especially skiing: “Now they listen to us. But they should listen before the dramas happen. With the Franzoso family, they had the courtesy to wait for the parents’arrival in South America before officially announcing Matteo&#8217s death. But it is another the’attention we ask for: that for safety. How many tragedies have to happen before something is really done about it? ”.

Even more chilling is the feeling that the’fatal accident for Matteo Franzoso was, according to Lorenzi, avoidable. “Yes, and this time I say it without a doubt – were his words -. The dynamics are clear. Matteo slipped, went under the nets and hit a windbreak at the edge of the track. It would be like putting poles on the edges of the highway instead of guardrails. This is not a fatality, but a very serious, textbook lack of prevention. At the’beginning of the ski season, something like this must give the institutions a wake-up call”.
