Who is Elisa Aguilar, the Gianni Petrucci of Spain.

On October 2, 2023, Elisa Aguilar and the FEB wrote a page of history. For the first time in its 100 years of existence-just in the year it celebrates its Centennial-the Spanish Basketball Federation has appointed a woman to its presidency. Elisa Aguilar was proclaimed president by the almost unanimous consent of the 79 Assembly members gathered in Madrid at an Extraordinary General Assembly. She thus takes over from Jorge Garbajosa, who a few months earlier had been appointed president of FIBA Europe.
Elisa is the twelfth person to hold the office in the Federation’s centennial history, succeeding the the twelfth person to hold the office in the Federation’s centennial history, succeeding Fidel Bricall, Gonzalo Aguirre, Pedro Conde, Emilio Sánchez Corona, General Jesús Querejeta, Anselmo López, Enrique Menor, Ernesto Segura de Luna, Pere Sust, José Luis Sáez, and Jorge Garbajosa.
Born in Madrid on October 15, 1976, Elisa Aguilar is the sixth player with the most appearances in the history of the women’s senior national team (222), of which she was playmaker, point guard and captain for more than a decade. With the Spain jersey, she won six medals (one gold, one silver and four bronze), having also been an international in youth and junior selections.
Her club career has been equally important and successful. Growing up in the Canoe, she played for teams such as Salamanca, Canarias, Ros Casares and Rivas Ecópolis, as well as having played for Washington University (NCAA), the Utah Starzz (NWBA) and Spartak Moscow. With these formations he won numerous trophies: championships, cups, super cups…
Shortly after retiring from playing basketball – which occurred with the gold medal at the 2013 European Championship – Elisa Aguilar joined the FEB staff. Since 2017, she has served as FEB Director of Competitions, also participating in several committees of the federation structure: Executive Commission, Competitions, Women and Sports, and Inclusive Sports. In addition, she is a member of the Board of FIBA Europe and its Women’s Commission, and shortly before her election as FEB President she was also appointed to the FIBA Men’s National Teams Commission.
