World Athletics 2025, the final medal table: record-breaking Azzurri despite four flops

Record-breaking haul for Italy’s athletics at the World Championships that closed Sunday in Tokyo. Italy finished with seven medals including 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. Mattia Furlani stole the show with gold in the long jump, but Nadia Battocletti was not to be outdone with two silver and bronze medals in the 10,000 and 5,000 meters. Applause also Antonella Palmisano (march), Ilias Aouani (marathon), Andrea Dellavalle (triple jump) and Leonardo Fabbri (shot put), the other Italians who made the podium.

There was no shortage of disappointments, especially in the blue sprint with the heroes of Tokyo 2021 running dry, Marcell Jacobs in primis. Also hurting were Gianmarco Tamberi, Larissa Iapichino and Andy Diaz, three other stars of blue athletics who did not experience a lucky World Championships.

In the previous edition, the one staged in Budapest in 2023, the first place finish in the medal table went to the United States with 12 golds, 8 silvers and 9 bronzes, for a total of 29 medals. In second place was Canada (4 golds, 2 silvers), third was Spain (4 golds, 1 silver). Italy had not gone beyond 13th place, finishing with one gold (that of Gianmarco Tamberi in the high jump), 2 silvers and a bronze.
