Spain has decided: replacement for Sergio Scariolo announced

The FEB (Federacion EspaƱola de Baloncesto) has decided: Chus Mateo is the new technical commissioner of the Spanish men’s national basketball team. The Madrid-born coach, born in 1969, will take the place of Sergio Scariolo, who left Spain after a disappointing adventure at Eurobasket 2025.
Mateo, who was exonerated by Real Madrid last June after 3 years on the Blancos’ bench, will be unveiled on Tuesday, September 12, at 12 noon at the Spanish Basketball Federation Museum, before taking over the leadership of the national team.
Mateo will make his debut on Spain’s bench at the FIBA window in November when the Spanish national team will be engaged against Denmark and Georgia in Group A qualifying for the 2027 World Cup, to be held in Qatar.
In his time at Real Madrid, Mateo has won a whopping six titles: two championships, two Super Cups, a’Euroleague and a Copa del Rey.
