Gewiss Stadium goodbye: Bergamo stadium becomes New Balance Arena

The Gewiss Stadium is no more: the stadium in Bergamo will be called New Balance Arena. The name change has not yet been made official by Atalanta, but it is only a matter of time. During the course of the day on Wednesday, in fact, the Orobico facility experienced the’installation of the first signs that already bear the name it will adopt later this season.
When the sponsorship agreement with Gewiss ended at the conclusion of last season, Atalanta had taken steps to remove all references to the company from the stadium. The consequence for weeks was a huge “hole” present on the facades of the two corners, and a generic reference to the “Bergamo stadium” on the club”s official channels. After the’indication that the choice was directed toward “New Balance Arena” had gradually become more and more credited, then, on Wednesday there was a concrete move in that direction.
The south curve, located in front of the main square of the Bergamo stadium, in fact saw the installation of the new sign that clearly bears the words “New Balance Arena”, complete with the logo of the U.S. clothing brand that just from this season has become the supplier of the Nerazzurri team. Although confirmation from Atalanta itself is still lacking, therefore, there are no longer any doubts. The’officiality of the choice could come on Oct. 17: anniversary of the club’s founding.
For the stadium in the Orobic capital, this is not the first name change. Founded as the Mario Brumana stadium in 1928, it simply became “Comunale” in the immediate postwar period. Renamed Atleti Azzurri d’Italia stadium in 1994, it retained this name until the completion of the first phase of renovation: that of the north curve. When the latter was handed over, it became Gewiss Stadium, then changed to New Balance Arena in the current season. It only remains to be seen when the new name will be official once and for all.
