Ferrari, FP2 disaster in Singapore: Charles Leclerc vs. Lando Norris in the pits

Ferrari already in trouble after Friday’s free practice session in Singapore. FP2 at the Marina Bay circuit ended with Charles Leclerc ninth and Lewis Hamilton tenth in a session that saw Oscar Piastri’s McLaren place ahead of everyone. The real trouble for the Monegasque doesn’t end there, however, as a collision of his in the pit lane with Lando Norris’s other papaya single-seater seriously risks a penalty to his detriment to be served on the grid.
The whole thing occurred at a relatively quiet stage of FP2, with several cars ready to return to the track after being in the pits. The problem stemmed from the fact that Leclerc was given the green light by the mechanics to enter the pitlane as Norris’s McLaren, which had started further back, was overtaking. Inevitable contact between the two, with Race Direction immediately noticing the’happening and launching an’investigation for “Unsafe Release”. That is, unsafe pit start procedure.
Analyzing the images, it can be seen that the’episode is not the result of a mere mistake but stems from a miscommunication between Ferrari men and Leclerc himself. Upon returning to the pit lane, in fact, the chief mechanic initially signals the Monegasque driver to move forward and then shifts giving the impression of suggesting he stop. The message, however, is not received and the SF-25 bumps into Norris’ McLaren, which was advancing at a regular speed and finds itself against the wall despite having tried to avoid the collision. A dynamic whose precedents speak for themselves: the penalty is all but a foregone conclusion, with the No. 16 car facing a relegation on the Singapore Grand Prix grid from two to five positions.
The result is a penalty of between two and five positions.
Turning to the track results, Ferrari disappoints again. After the second and fourth places in the morning, Leclerc and Hamilton find themselves as mentioned only in ninth and tenth. In front of everyone, at the end of a session marked by two red flags for the accidents of George Russell and Liam Lawson, is placed as said Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen goes no further than third, ahead of the Aston Martin of a Fernando Alonso who seemed to be in excellent form. Only fifth is Norris, more than three tenths behind his teammate. Instead, the Rosse remit detachments close to seven tenths, both again beaten also by the Williams of Carlos Sainz eighth.
