Jannik Sinner begins his journey at the Vienna tournament as best he could, demonstrating his ability not to be distracted by the controversy surrounding his withdrawal from the Davis Cup Finals.

The South Tyrolean champion, in fact, swept aside German Daniel Altmaier in the first round, beating him 6-0, 6-2 in just under an hour of play. In the second round he will find Flavio Cobolli in an all-Italian challenge.

That Sinner is on a good day can be seen from the very first game, won by the current world number 2 on the serve of his opponent, who occupies the 51st position in the world rankings. It is only the beginning of a real monologue in the first set, which goes into the archives after just twenty-three minutes amid the applause of the audience present at the Wiener Stadthalle.

The second fraction is also little more than a workout for Sinner, who although he gives up a couple of games to the German never gives the feeling that he can lose control over a match dominated far and wide. Success is certified at the conclusion of the’eighth game, on the second match point available to the outfielder from Sesto Pusteria.

Jannik Sinner is aiming to replicate, in Vienna, the success of 2023, when he beat Russian Daniil Medvedev 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3 in a fierce final, kicking off a string of successes that would lead him, in June 2024, to the top of the ATP rankings for the first time, a record he retained for more than a year and which Sinner wants to regain in the coming season.
