Elia Viviani, fairytale cycling farewell with World Championships gold medal

Lacrimony, emotion and many hugs accompanied Elia Viviani’s last performance in the blue jersey. The Veronese champion’s last dance was a long, warm embrace with his public, which has followed him over the years, and with all lovers of the track, from anywhere in the world.
The warm Chilean public, which filled the Velódromo Peñalolén on the last day of competitions, greeted the Rio gold medalist, the new Elimination world champion, on their feet, paying tribute to an athlete who has contributed in a unique way to the revival of the Italian track.
“I could not imagine a better way to end my career,” said the fresh Elimination winner. “I knew I still had something to say and that is why I wanted to finish at the World Championships. I am proud of what I have done over the years and I thank the Santiago public for the tribute they have given me. When I started racing on the track I was alone; now, next to me, there are many young people who have already shown they can have their say. I leave it to them to continue the work”.

For the Federation and the entire staff of the National Team present in Chile, today – the final day of the Track World Championships – was a special date, full of meaning. President Cordiano Dagnoni also recalled this at the end of the event: “On behalf of the entire movement, I thank Elia Viviani for everything he has given to our cycling. When a great champion hangs up his bike, it is always a special moment. We take comfort in knowing that Elia will remain in our world. We will have time, together, to plan for the future. Today is the day to celebrate this new world title in an exciting race, but also of farewells and thanks. I don’t think there can be better words than a simple, sincere, heartfelt: thank you, Elia, for all these years and for what you have made us live today!”.
