Yann Bisseck’s foul on Giovane during Verona-Inter sparked a hurricane of controversy. The Nerazzurri defender was only cautioned by’referee Doveri despite being last man, unleashing the anger of the public in the stands of the Bentegodi. An episode on which Gianpaolo Calvarese intervened, defending the decision made by the match director and the Var who assisted him.

“From the first still image it seems that Bisseck’s foul is a red card – said Calvarese -. However, the second shot confirms the fact that the ball is moving towards the sideline and towards another Inter player, Sucic. So Doveri”s decision to caution Bisseck is sustainable”.

According to the regulations, the red card is no longer automatically triggered in the presence of “last man foul” but rather “clear goal opportunity”. The acronym used internationally is DOGSO (“Deny an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity”), a circumstance that the referee and Var of Verona-Inter do not believe materialized.

In the post-match press conference in Verona, Zanetti did not hide about the’incident involving Bisseck: “Talking about it is difficult. The ball goes in a lateral direction and not straight to the’area. However, Giovane, with the speed he has, a ball like that can go and retrieve it and then go into the goal. It was an extremely dangerous situation. But it was, we also had a colossal chance with Orban who hit the post. I am the same proud of the team”.
