Yann Bisseck’s foul on Giovane in Verona-Inter and especially his failure to be sent off continue to cause discussion. The Bentegodi crowd was enraged by referee Doveri&#8217s decision to caution the player, Paolo Zanetti at the end of the match held a similar line to his fans, but several former referees instead defended what the match director ruled in the match between the Scaligeri and Nerazzurri. One’other fan base, however, got on the warpath over the’episode: that of Roma.

The Giallorossi fans didn&#8217t hide on social media, not only because the victory in Verona brought Inter momentarily back on equal points with Roma itself. In fact, the Bisseck episode brought back memories of another recent “misdeed” which in turn sparked several controversies: a foul by Mats Hummels that was instead sanctioned with expulsion.

The reference is to the match Roma played in Bilbao against Athletic during last season’Athletic. A match that proved decisive in the Giallorossi’s elimination from the Europa League. And in which it was precisely Hummels who was the author of a foul that, months later, his fans consider far less serious than that of Bisseck in Verona.

The explanation of Doveri, referee of Verona-Inter, but also of former referees Gianpaolo Calvarese and Luca Marelli, is one. The rulebook clearly states that the ejection is no longer triggered in the presence of “last man foul” but of DOGSO (“clear and obvious goal opportunity”). Giovane’s gait not toward the goal but toward the sideline before Bisseck&#8217s foul would be the cause of the yellow card, but that does not seem to be enough for Verona. And, as the passage of hours is making clear, neither does Rome.
