Jannik Sinner and the Davis Cup: the champion returns to the controversy and puts a stop to it

Jannik Sinner’s decision not to participate in the final round of the Davis Cup continues to cause discussion among fans and insiders. But the champion from Sesto Pusteria, interviewed by Sky Sports in the program “Jannik, beyond tennis”, wanted to definitively clarify his reasons, with words that show awareness for his own path.
“At the end of the season, after all the pressures, the matches, the emotions, whether in victories or defeats, you need time to put it all back together – explained the Sesto Pusteria outfielder -For us athletes, an extra week of preparation is a lot: it allows you to arrive stronger, more charged, with more energy and above all with more desire”.
Sinner stressed how important it is, even mentally, to have a recovery period and targeted preparation: “It is not just about vacation, but about prevention, about balance, about sports longevity. We play tennis every day, and it’s okay to sometimes lack the desire. Starting to work a week earlier, without forcing right away, is also crucial to avoid injuries. I have no doubt: not playing Davis this year is the right choice”.
The champion also retraced his commitment to winning Davis 2024, explaining that that was a choice dictated by his heart and his promise to Matteo Berrettini: “Last year was different. I had not played in Paris and someone on my team had tried to hold me back, but I had promised Berrettini that we would play together, to reciprocate his support in 2023. And we won. Even then, though, I knew that in 2025 I would not participate”.
Finally, Sinner wanted to reiterate his confidence in the blue team, which he considers very strong even without him: “I am sorry that no one emphasizes how strong this team is, even without me. Even without Darderi, who is number 26 in the world, there are Cobolli, Musetti, Berrettini, and an incredible doubles team with Bolelli and Vavassori. The chances to win are very much there”.
