Jannik Sinner made it clear: in spite of the usual critics, he is happy to have been born in Italy and not in Austria. The Association of South Tyrolean Riflemen (Südtiroler Schützenbund), however, did not like it and published an open letter directed at the world tennis number one.

“In a free society, everyone can define his own identity. Your statement therefore is everyone’s right and deserves respect – began the group’s provincial commander, Christoph Schmid – But, dear Jannik, you also know that statements like this, especially coming out of the mouth of such a well-known personality, have an impact far beyond sports. They are welcomed not only by nationalists in Italy, but at the same time they are viewed with concern by some here at home. Because they touch on issues of central importance to us: our language, our history, our identity”.

“This same Austria that “rejects” has tirelessly committed itself to the rights of the South Tyrolean people over difficult decades, politically, diplomatically, and culturally– so continued the bitter outburst – Without this commitment, our current autonomy, our prosperity, and perhaps even your unique and familiar Puster dialect would hardly have survived”.

“That&#8220s why it hurts when prominent personalities in our country, with rash words, give the impression that this historical bond and hard-won autonomy have become insignificant– added Schmid. When you are asked in the future about your national feeling, please consider the scope of your words. Speak, if you wish, of your belonging to Italy, but do so with respect toward all those who identify themselves as South Tyroleans, Ladins or members of another minority. You, of all people, who travel the world so much, know that openness and diversity do not mean weakness, but strength”.

Closing with congratulations: “We thank you for understanding and, most of all, for the joy you give us with your extraordinary talent. You are a great athlete, a role model for many young people, and we wish you continued success on your path”.
