Ray Giubilo, Jannik Sinner, Jasmine Paolini and photo of the year.

Ray Giubilo in Turin presented his new volume (Flying Raquets, published for Allemandi) dedicated to two worlds he knows perfectly well: that of photography, of which he is a highly quoted exponent, and that of tennis. Sportal.it interviewed him talking with him also about Jannik Sinner, Jasmine Paolini and the photo of the year.
“I don’t know the South Tyrolean champion in person – explained the Italian-Australian -Positioned courtside, however, I have seen so much of him. From the outside he may look cold, perfect. In reality I saw him get angry with his box, with himself, with the referees. There are sides of his character that can only be grasped by standing there, in silence, a few feet away”.
“It was born in total relaxation the now famous photo of Jasmine– he then pointed out -. I was doing experiments with long times, I had portraits in mind. I was behind the net, I had only a small space between the camera and the post. She came through, made a forehand, then coming back to the line she made that gesture with her racket in her hand. I took two pictures. At that moment I didn’t realize how powerful the shot was. Then I reviewed it, posted it, and it made the rounds on social media also thanks to perfect music that created an almost surreal” atmosphere.
“I am very focused on the job – he concluded -If you watch the game you miss the right shot. I almost always stay on one player, except when I am up high and can get wider shots, like in doubles. I also keep an eye on the score: you know when a strong gesture, an emotional reaction or a plastic moment might come”.
