In more than 22 years of militancy in the national team, with no less than 226 total appearances, Cristiano Ronaldo was the subject of the first red card ever. The’unfortunate event happened at 61′ of Ireland -Portugal. Decisive was the intervention of the VAR that considered the’intervention, with the elbow, of CR7 towards the Irishman O’Shea to be expelled.

A red that could cost CR7 dearly. Taking for granted the World Cup pass (Portugal must not lose the’last match with Armenia), here is that the’former star player of, among others, Real Madrid and Juventus, might start the World Cup late.

If Cristiano Ronaldo is disqualified for two or more matches, the Portuguese striker would have to serve the remainder of his disqualification at the upcoming World Cup.

Roberto Martinez, coach of the Portuguese national team, defended CR7 to the hilt in the post-match: “I think it is difficult for a player like Cristiano, who is always struggling inside the penalty area. He had two defenders constantly on him. There was no violence. He tried to get past the defender and was unlucky with the VAR. The angle of the images makes the situation look worse than it really is. It is Ronaldo’s first red card with the national team, it is unbelievable” his clear words. Ball to FIFA for a not easy decision.
