Italy in Davis Cup final! Endless tie-break rewards Flavio Cobolli, Belgium eliminated

For the third consecutive year and for the 10th time in its history Italy is in the Davis Cup final. A very important result for the men captained by Filippo Volandri, with Flavio Cobolli who at the end of a marathon of just over three hours followed up Berrettini’s success against Collignon by beating Zizou Bergs in turn in three interminable sets on the concrete of the Super Tennis Arena in BolognaFiere.
6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(15) the score in favor of Cobolli, who thus also avoids the extra effort of the doubles, which as per the rules will not be played having Italy already won the two singles matches. Although without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, the two Italian Top 10 players who decided together with the staff not to play Davis, Italy will still have the chance to win a historic trio.
To get the decisive point against the Belgians, however, it had to wait until the conclusion of a particularly intense tie-break in the third set, in which neither Cobolli nor Bergs were able, for long, to find the double mini-break needed to bring home the decisive game. It even went as far as 15-15 before the Roman, pushed also by the crowd in the stands, managed to give the winning acceleration, with the two consecutive points of success.
Contending for the Salad Bowl on Sunday will be the winner of Spain-Germany, the second semifinal whose matches are scheduled for Saturday.
The Spanish team defeated the Czech Republic not without pain, while the Germans, who boast the only Top 10 player in this final stage, Alexander Zverev, beat Argentina again in three matches.
