Happy birthday to Achille Polonara, an example of courage

He turned 34 years old Achille Polonara, a basketball champion whose story affected everyone. He had undergone surgery for testicular neoplasia in 2023.

The player, perfectly healed, had gradually returned to activity both with Virtus Bologna and with the jersey of the Italian national team. But then he faced an unfortunately far greater obstacle.

“Virtus Pallacanestro Bologna S.p.A. announces that over the past few weeks Achille Polonara underwent further specialized medical investigations following which a diagnosis of myeloid leukemia was made. Polonara is now hospitalized at the Sant’Orsola Malpighi Hospital in Bologna where he has already begun specific therapies. The entire Virtus Segafredo Bologna family is close to Achille and his loved ones and wishes the boy a speedy recovery. Come on Achi we are all with you, we are waiting for you!” the mid-June announcement of the Bologna club, which had him under contract.

With great courage the athlete – now on the roster of Dinamo Sassari – is fighting against the disease: after undergoing a bone marrow transplant there were complications related to a thrombus that put him in a coma, a state in which he remained for about ten days.

Two weeks ago he returned home to continue his battle and, from the microphones of Mediaset, he also made a very touching appeal. “It’s a beautiful Sunday – he said -. Join ADMO (Bone Marrow Donor Association), it costs nothing and you can save a life”.
