Lorenzo Musetti speaks out on relationship with Jannik Sinner

Concluding the 2025 season in the Top 10, which although without winning tournaments brought great satisfaction such as reaching three finals (including the one at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000) and the semifinal at Roland Garros, Lorenzo Musetti analyzed in an interview to the ’D’ insert ‘D’ of Repubblica not only his year, but also his relationship with the current number one of Italian tennis, Jannik Sinner.
“Fortunately I have Sinner, I will never say ‘unfortunately’ – said the Carrara tennis player.
There is no such rivalry: exasperating tensions in sport, which has so many of them, is not useful. Besides, Jannik I have him by my side. He is not an enemy who takes away my air, he is a champion who shows the way. A point of reference. Different from me? Sure. More powerful, solid, consistent. But I do not judge it a disadvantage to have happened to be in the same period as him”.
Musetti then admitted that he wanted some of the qualities of the South Tyrolean, but did not necessarily want to emulate him: “We are walking on different but parallel tracks– the class of 2002 explained further -, each matures in his own time, both of us have had to endure pressure, there have always been high expectations on us”.
Sinner and Musetti, who together won the Davis Cup in 2023 and 2024 (both withdrew, for different reasons, from this year’s nonetheless victorious edition), have met three times on the court, with as many successes for the South Tyrolean in Antwerp 2021, Monte Carlo 2025, and US Open 2025. A fourth meeting, scheduled for the quarterfinals of the Barcelona ATP 500 in 2023, was not played due to an injury to Sinner.
