NBA in Europe, Federbasket-FIBA meeting: Gianni Petrucci reiterates support

The president of the Italian Basketball Federation, Gianni Petrucci, met Wednesday in Rome with FIBA Europe peer Jorge Garbajosa and executive director Kamil Novak. Also present at the meeting was Maurizio Bertea, secretary general of FIP. Several issues of international scope were discussed during the meeting, with a focus on the ongoing dialogue between FIBA and the NBA.
The International Federation and the National Basketball Association are in fact considering the possibility of starting a league on the American model in the Old Continent, to be launched in a relatively short time. The project, in fact, could kick off as early as the 2027/2028 season with a competition composed of twelve clubs admitted by right and four others through a meritocratic system.
The league would be based on the American model.
The rule that obliges all clubs involved to continue to participate in their respective top national championships would remain firm.
The calendar of the new league would also be structured to respect the windows dedicated to national teams, so as to avoid the difficulties encountered in recent years in the management of convocations.
At the end of the meeting with FIBA’s European summits, Petrucci reiterated the Italian Basketball Federation’s full support for the current governance of the international federation.
