After the era of the Big Three (Federer-Nadal-Djokovic) came the era of the Jannik Sinner-Carlos Alcaraz duopoly: the days of U.S. tennis dominance are long gone, and the last star-studded success in a men&#8217s Slam tournament dates back to the 2003 U.S. Open with Andy Roddick. In an interview with Front Office Sports Ben Shelton expressed confidence that U.S. tennis players will soon return to the top: “I think we are on the right track now. I think having such a density of players at the top is important. And then it’s inevitable. It’s just going to happen. And we’re slowly getting there”.

The United States has 15 tennis players in the top 100 in the world, more than any other nation, and two in the Top 10: among them is Ben Shelton, who has set a career goal of joining Sinner and Alcaraz. “It&#8217s a question we get asked by the media pretty much every week, at least every month, and I can&#8217t tell you when it&#8217s going to happen, I just know we&#8217re on the right track. We have two players in the top 10 right now (Shelton and Taylor Fritz ed.), something that hasn&#8217t happened in a while, and a lot of young up-and-comers who may soon reach the same level in the ATP rankings“.

“Having a number of players at the top who are confident and ready for their moment and to give their all to win a Slam… I think sooner or later it will happen”. Shelton in a recent interview spoke in laudatory tones about Sinner: “The ball speed with him is really incredible. I have never seen anything like it: when you play against him, everything seems to go twice as fast. Also on indoor courts when he hits the serve ball he places it very close to the lines. And he does it with pinpoint accuracy” explained the left-handed tennis player originally from Georgia.

“When I think about the three opponents I faced in Turin, I realize that they all served longline, but Sinner was probably the closest of the three. There’s a slight difference between him, Zverev and Auger-Aliassime in what they did in this tournament. I think his serve makes him very, very difficult to beat here. Obviously, the ability to take his time and hit winners from different spots – from the baseline, from anywhere on the court – is a huge advantage”. Shelton this season won his first Masters 1000 of his career in Toronto, overcoming Kachanov in the final.
