The second timed run of the women’s World Cup downhill in St. Moritz on Thursday was marked by a bad accident for one of the stars of the white circus, Michelle Gisin. The Helvetic, who started with number 17, fell in the final section of the course, slipping until she broke through the first safety net and then came to rest against the second.

The race was suspended.

The race was suspended for several minutes, so much so that Lindsey Vonn, who had meanwhile taken to the piste in number 18, had to stop her own descent while rescuers tended to Gisin, who was later taken away by helicopter to Klinik Gut in St. Moritz-Bad for the necessary medical checks.

According to reports in the Swiss portal Blick, Gisin has always been conscious, so much so that she indulged in some banter with her rescuers. However, despite this positive sign, it will be necessary to wait for the’outcome of examinations to understand the physical condition of the Swiss champion.

Gisin’s fall adds to an already difficult time for Swiss women’s skiing, which has to do without Lara Gut-Behrami (cruciate ligament rupture) and Corinne Suter (left leg muscle injury). The Swiss team is now crossing its fingers that tests will not confirm another extended stop for one of the most anticipated speed stars.

The downhill race then continued into the rest of the morning, with the best time achieved by another athlete from the Confederation, Joana Hählen: 1’32″70 was her time, 13 hundredths faster than Ester Ledecka, second, 21 hundredths faster than Sofia Goggia and 22 against Laura Pirovano’another Italian national.
