"It’s the future of tennis": Mouratoglou warns Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz closed out another season as absolute rulers of the ATP circuit. The Blue and the Spaniard, world number two and one respectively, shared the spoils in terms of Grand Slam titles: Jannik won the Australian Open and Wimbledon, in the very final with the Murcian, while Carlos triumphed at Roland Garros and the Us Open, defeating the South Tyrolean in the final on both occasions. Sinner finished the season with 6 titles, the last of which ’the ATP Finals in Turin –won right in the final with Alcaraz, who instead finished 2025 with 8 titles to his credit.
The latter was the winner of the ATP Finals in Turin.
However, according to Patrick Mouratoglou, the duopoly between world number one and two could be broken in the coming years by Joao Fonseca, a young Brazilian talent who ended the year at position number 24 in the ATP rankings, equaling his personal best ranking. “This year he has grown exponentially – the French coach pointed out in a video posted on his Instagram account -. He has had ups and downs. He has experienced what it means to feel incredible pressure”.
“You can imagine how much the Brazilian fans support him, which is good, but it also represents a lot of responsibility for such a young guy” added the popular transalpine coach -. If you look at his ranking, year after year he is growing impressively. He is the future of men’s tennis. Potentially, in the next few years–maybe not as early as next year’he can compete with Alcaraz and Sinner because he has what it takes to do so”.
In the meantime, Jannik and Carlos will be featured in the’AO 1 Point Slam, the “appetizer tournament” of the Australian Open characterized by matches decided by playing a single point, next Jan. 14. The South Tyrolean also took up the challenge, joining his friend-rival Murciano, who had already confirmed his presence in recent weeks.
Along with Sinner, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the WTA rankings, respectively, are also entered in the tournament. Among the men, the presence of Nick Kyrgios, one of the first to accept the challenge proposed by the organizers of the first Slam of the season, is also expected.
