It was clear and obvious that Laura Siegemund and Édouard Roger-Vasselin would set the trap for Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. After all, the German and the Frenchman in their careers can also boast success at Roland Garros 2024. And so it was: the Australian Open mixed doubles match ended in one hour and twelve minutes with a score of 6-4 6-2 for the Italian pair’s opponents. Three out of four turnovers snatched from Errani ultimately weighed like a boulder.
In the first set the Italians broke serve at 1-2. On 3-5 Errani and Vavassori try to come back, but Andrea’s response lob is inaccurate and the German exalts herself under the net. In the following game, Errani holds up well in the exchanges, but Roger-Vasselin’s cross forehand pushes her away from the court and paves the way for Siegemund to close the set decisively at the net.

In the second partial, Vavassori still struggles in response and in the exchange, and the development follows that of the previous set: break for the Franco-German pair in the third game. The key episode comes at 4-2, with Errani serving. The opponents immediately go up 0-40 and then, after the Azzurri’s reaction, Siegemund finds a backhand volley that makes it 5-2 and the decisive break. In the next game, the German held serve to zero and thus ended the match on 6-4, 6-2.

Siegemund and Roger-Vasselin are both experienced doubles players, as evidenced by their palmarès: the 37-year-old from Filderstadt won the 2016 US Open in mixed doubles with Mate Pavic, as well as the women’s doubles title at the 2020 US Open with Vera Zvonareva; the 42-year-old from Gennevilliers, on the other hand, boasts a Slam triumph in men’s doubles, achieved at Roland Garros 2014 together with Julien Benneteau

Thus, the Australian journey of Vavassori, already defeated on Thursday in the men’s doubles along with Simone Bolelli, comes to an early end. On Saturday Sara will be back on court in the women’s doubles with Jasmine Paolini against Australia’s Kimberly Birrell and Talia Gibson.

In the previous edition of the Melbourne tournament, Errani and Vavassori were stopped in the round of 16, defeated by Britons Olivia Nicholls and Henry Patten also in that case in only two sets: 6-3, 6-4.
