Fear in training for Jonas Vingegaard, a cycling star and captain of the Visma-Lease team who has won two Tour de France and a Vuelta of Spain in his career. The Danish cyclist, who announced in January his first participation in the Giro d’Italia, is training in Spain to prepare for the first event of the season, the UAE Tour, scheduled for Feb. 16-22 in the Middle East. Near Malaga he fell to the ground during a descent while going around 45 mph, remaining unscathed.

“Jonas is fine and did not suffer any major injuries” is the Visma team statement. “In general, as a team we would like to urge cycling fans to always put safety first. For your own sake and the sake of others, please give the riders as much space and peace of mind as possible” during training sessions. Vingegaard allegedly crashed in a corner while trying to dislodge a cyclo-amateur, who was trying to stay on his wheel.

The Danish champion, according to Sporza reports, would have fallen precisely along the Fuente la Reina descent, suffering only a few abrasions, after being annoyed by some amateur cyclists who were trying to follow him. Vingegaard will participate in his first Giro d’Italia in May: “I have been thinking about participating in the Giro for a while’ and I feel it is the perfect time to make my debut. Winning the Vuelta last fall motivates me even more to win in Italy as well. I would like to add the pink jersey to my collection”, he had said in a note.

“In the last five years my program before the Tour has been more or less the same. This time I chose to do things differently. The Tour route is perhaps less challenging than in recent years, which makes the transition to the Tour more favorable”.

So far Vingegaard has participated in five Tour de France triumphing in 2022 and 2023 always ahead of Pogacar and finishing second in 2021, 2024 and 2025 always behind the Slovenian. At the Vuelta, on the other hand, he has taken the start three times, with a 46th place in 2020, a second in 2023, and victory in 2025.
