Jannik Sinner has made it to the final round of the Australian Open: after his victory in the round of 16 against compatriot Luciano Darderi, the Azzurro will face an arch rival, Ben Shelton, whom he has faced several times before. The South Tyrolean tennis player, who seems to have almost fully recovered from the physical crisis suffered during the match with Eliot Spizzirri, wants to qualify for the semifinals of the Melbourne Slam, and thus join Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev.

The match against Ben Shelton will be held at Rod Laver Arena, the center court of the Australian Open, no earlier than 9 a.m. Italian time. Earlier on that same court will be held the’other quarterfinal between Lorenzo Musetti and Novak Djokovic. Evening match then for l’Azzurro, who in case of passage of the round will face right in the semifinals one between the Carrara player and the Belgrade star, already 10 times winner of the Australian Open.

Sinner and Shelton have faced each other nine times in the past: the Italian has won on eight occasions, while the American has won only once. Sinner has won the last eight matches and is favored: he already beat Shelton at the Australian Open just a year ago, in the semifinals and in three sets. The U.S. in the past few days in the round of 16 folded Norway’s Casper Ruud in four sets showing that he is in very good shape and cannot be underestimated.

“In this sport things can change in an instant, however at the same time you can’t always win in three sets” said Sinner at a press conference after the victory over Darderi. “If I had lost that third set, I still would have been ahead two sets to one. I felt pretty comfortable, honestly”.

On the day off: “Taking the day off also means putting aside the tournament atmosphere a little bit: I like to be where there is less chaos, less people. We will do some indoor training, the most important thing is to recover as much as possible. I will try to rest, sleep, eat well and then hopefully be ready for the next day”.
